Class Experience
If your child struggles with reading, writing, or grammar, I am here to help. I have taught in the public school system for more than eighteen years. In that time, I learned that you begin where the child is and grow from there. Your child IS the priority. If YOU have specific skills you would like to me work on with your child, please let me know. The outline below is a suggestion. If I do not hear from you, I will follow the schedule outlined as written. In this class, I will provide one-to-one tutoring for your child. During the first class, your child and I will have a comfortable discussion so they can get to know me, and I can get to know them. This discussion is crucial. In order to teach your child, I have to make a connection with your child. After our initial discussion, I will have your child read a short, high-interest article where I will assess their fluency, pronunciation, decoding skills, and comprehension abilities. After this, they will engage in an interactive grammar activity. From there, I will create activities targeting the skills they need to improve. Each week, we will work on a target skill. Week 1: 8/14 Discussion, friendly assessment activities Week 2: 8/4, 8/25 Fiction Reading comprehension- main idea mini-lesson- Grammar- identifying subject/verb Week 3: 8/11, 9/1 Fiction Reading comprehension- theme mini-lesson-Grammar- subject/verb agreement Week 4: 8/18, 9/8 Fiction Reading Comprehension- characterization mini-lesson-Grammar: simple sentences Week 5: 8/25, 9/15 Fiction Reading Comprehension- Influence of setting mini-lesson-Grammar: Compound Sentences Week 6: 9/1, 9/22 Fiction Reading Comprehension- Point of View mini-lesson-Grammar- Complex Sentences Week 7: 9/8, 9/27 Expository Reading Comprehension- annotating mini-lesson-Grammar- pronouns and antecedents Week 8: 9/15, 10/6 Expository Reading Comprehension- annotating mini-lesson-Grammar- present tense verbs Week 9: 9/22, 10/13 Reading and Analyzing Poetry- Parts of a poem mini-lesson- L:iterary Devices- similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole, alliteration, consonance Week 10: 9/27, 10/20 Reading and Analyzing Poetry- TPCAST Mnemonic strategy A recording of the class will be posted automatically after it has been rendered. If there are no learners in attendance, no video will be created. I will enter the zoom classroom on time. Per Outschool policy, I will wait ten minutes for learners to attend. If no learners enter the zoom meeting within this time frame, I will leave.
