Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
This is a novel study class for the book, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding. It is a 6-week class. Any assignments are optional. I will be happy to provide a grade report for completed assignments.

This is the story about a group of boys stranded on an island after their plane crashes. The boys are left to their own devices. In the beginning, the boys attempt to create a civilized society. Unfortunately, their paradise does not last.

During this class, attention will be spent discussing the motivation and actions of the characters, the themes of the story, figurative language used by the author, diction, symbolism, conflict, and open-ended discussions.
Students will be encouraged to contribute in all discussions.

** All classes will begin on time as long as there is at least one learner in the classroom. If there are no students in the class 10 minutes after the class start time, the teacher will exit the classroom. This class cannot be taught with zero students. No recording will be available for classes with zero attendance.
Learning Goals
Students will explore and analyze the themes of civilization versus savagery, the inherent darkness within humanity, and the impact of fear on behavior, fostering a deeper understanding of psychological and sociological concepts.
Students will examine the development of key characters and their moral dilemmas throughout the novel, assessing how their choices reflect broader themes and contribute to the narrative's message about power and society.
