Beginner Level
In this semester-long course, students will learn basic forms of creative writing. At the end of the class, they will have a portfolio of writing samples. They will also be provided with resources for publication if they are interested in pursuing this outlet.

This schedule is a rough estimate of the semester curriculum. It may change slightly as I get to know the students and their learning styles.

Classes will mostly consist of writing time and discussion. However, some classes may include short lectures to help students learn different writing forms. Students are welcome to get up and take a break during writing time.

Weeks 1-3: Creative Process. Students will get to know me and each other. We will discuss their expectations for the course and why creative writing is important to the world. They will be given various writing prompts to help them develop their writing style.

Weeks 4-8: Fiction. Students will learn about plot, setting, character, and other important elements of fiction. They will analyze short stories, and I will guide them through the process of writing their own . They will also learn how to edit, revise, and provide and receive constructive criticism. 

Weeks 9-13: Creative Nonfiction. Students will learn about creative nonfiction forms such as memoir, biography, literary journalism, travel writing, and food writing.  They will use fiction writing techniques to complete such forms as personal essay, food writing, travel writing, and literary journalism.

Weeks 14-15: Poetry. Students will learn about a few different types of poetry, including narrative poems, elegies, odes, and free verse. They will practice writing their own poems.

Weeks 16-17: Screenplays.  Students will also learn basic screenwriting techniques. They will complete various activities that develop screenwriting skills. 

Week 18: Careers and Publication. Students will learn about different careers that involve creative writing. They will also learn avenues for publication of interested, both as students and as adults. 

Knowledge of sentence structure and grammar is recommended. Love of stories is preferred.  

This is a very independent course. I am available to meet with students live as needed to assist them.

Parental Guidance
All material will be school-appropriate. However, as this is a creative writing course, classmates may choose to write about sensitive topics.
