Class Experience

****No experience is required for this course****

As schools start up again and Math and English classes resume, it is also important to take a break sometimes... and what better way to do that than by kicking back a little and relaxing with some art?

Chibi is a Japanese word meaning short or small. It has also come to denote the art style in which characters' proportions are exaggerated, drawn small and well... cute. It is a style that can be used to make beautiful art, while still being easy and fun, thus making it the perfect style for beginner artists to learn. Of course, there are multiple different variations of the chibi style, but the one we will be learning is the simplistic style seen in the class image.

This live class, broken into four sessions will take students through the basics of drawing these chibi characters, and will follow the curriculum described below:
Session 1:-
- Topics -> Drawing the face, different eye shapes, hair
- In-class work -> Draw your portrait using what you've learned
- Homework -> Draw a portrait of someone/ a character you like
Session 2:-
- Topics -> Expressing different emotions, drawing the full body, drawing clothes
- In-class work -> Draw yourself using what you've learned
- Homework -> Create a drawing of someone/a character you like
Session 3:-
- Topics -> Drawing dynamic poses (hands akimbo, surprised stance, sitting, walking, jumping, hugging)
- In-class work -> Try to come up with your own pose using the anatomy we've learned
- Homework -> Draw a superhero or warrior in an action pose
Session 4:-
- Topics -> Drawing chibi-style animals (dog, cat, fox, hedgehog)
- In-class work -> Draw a character with an animal sidekick
- Homework -> Keep drawing!

I do own a digital tablet and will share my screen and use it to draw so that the students can see each step clearly rather than having to squint at a piece of paper I'm holding up, but the students will be expected to be drawing along on paper. See Learner's Supply List below for more information.
I will NOT be covering color theory in this course as I want to focus on the drawing, but students can color their work if they wish.

***NOTE TO PARENTS FOR SUMMER/FALL 2020***
I am unsure what times work best for this course, so please do not hesitate to reach out to me with scheduling suggestions!

Learning Goals

I hope that my students will be able to work on and create their own characters after completing this course.

Other Details

Supply List
As this is an art class, students of course need paper, a pencil to draw with and an eraser to fix mistakes.
- The paper should be un-lined, so I would suggest either a sketchbook with smooth paper (not textured), or printer paper.
- Number 2 sharpenable pencils are the standard, but I've found that mechanical pencils are also work quite well.
Students should also have a fine-point sharpie or black ink pen to use to define their line-work after a sketch, but this is not absolutely necessary.
This course will not specifically cover coloring, but the students may want to color their work, and for that I suggest colored pencils, NOT crayons or markers.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, I'm Maryfrances!
Thank you so much for considering me to be your (or your child's) instructor today!

I have been a tutor/instructor for five years now, and I am excited to share my knowledge and passions with students who are excited to learn.

I have a degree in Computer Science, which I have been studying for nearly a decade now. It is a unique, new, yet quickly-growing field that manages to combine math and science with the creativity of the Arts, and enables our societies to progress at speeds never before seen in all of human history. Knowing just a little bit of how computers work can get you very ahead in life. I'm here to teach Java and Python, two of the most widely used programming languages today, as well as useful skills such as Web Design to equip my students with the skills they need to go on to become brilliant Computer Scientists.

Not only do I speak the language of computers, but I can also communicate quite well with humans: years of studying Japanese and a minor degree in the subject has succeeded in bringing me to conversational fluency. Japanese is classified as one of the hardest languages for English speakers to learn, but I'm here to say that you can go from awkwardly saying "konnichiwa" to being able to read こんにちは and being able to understand the two meanings of 今日は with just a little hard work.

My teaching philosophy focuses on understanding. Too many times have I seen students simply memorize and regurgitate information they have been taught. I prefer to break difficult concepts into digestible chunks so that my students can learn and retain as much as they possibly can.

I hope to see you in one of my classes!
