7 hrs 30 mins in-class hoursHomework
1-2 hours per week. Practice makes perfect, so there will be homework after almost every single session. Each homework assignment should take 20-30 minutes, and mostly involves grammar exercise questions. Students will also be expected to learn vocab words, kanji and katakana between classes, which may take another 40 minutes.Class Experience
Beginner's Guide to Japanese II (BGJ2) will take students through some more essentials of speaking and writing Japanese! It is highly recommended that you take the previous class first, or at the very least are familiar with all of the topics covered in that course. ***ABOUT*** Like with BGJ1, this course will be broken up into ten sessions that build off of each other, so it is important to not miss class. The BGJ series is unique because it focuses on teaching students structures and patterns, rather than just having them memorize set phrases. Also, rather than focusing on just one topic, for example verbs, for eight weeks, I teach little important topics that come together and help students speak more complex sentences. ***NEW WITH BGJ2*** We will have short demo conversations at the beginning of class every class starting with the third week to practice speaking more confidently. If there's still time at the end of class, we will have more conversations! ***CURRICULUM*** We will cover the following topics each week: 第1週 Review of BGJ I Kanji Katakana 第2週 ません、ました and ませんでした Verbs with Special Particles 第3週 Ending Particles ね and よ この・その・あの Xがあります・います 第4週 The Particle も ~にあります・います ここ・そこ・あそこ 第5週 Location に Noun が ある・いる Frequency Adverbs 第6週 て Form たくさん and すこし すごく, とても and ちょっと 第7週 て to Describe a Series of Events Describing Oneself (hair, height, etc) 第8週 てください Invitations with ませんか Politely Refusing an Invitation 第9週 てもいい てはいけません てすみません 第10週 Final Project Some topics may bleed into other weeks. ***KANJI*** Students will learn two kanji per week: 人木私花女男先生学校車本母父今日月明。 ***IN CLASS*** For following along in class, I will provide printable worksheets. It is important to pay attention to the classroom page and have these available before each session. Students may also follow along in a notebook if printing proves troublesome. ***AFTER CLASS*** I try to make class fun, but since Japanese is, in fact, a completely different language, this class requires dedication on the student's part. I really do want my students to be able to learn the concepts and have them stick, so there will be homework for practice after almost every single session. Students will also be encouraged to remember about 6-10 vocabulary words each week, in addition to 2 kanji. On the final day, the final project will be to write a skit in Japanese using all that has been learned. The students that do best in BGJ are the hardworking students fueled by a passion for language learning. Students that don't do homework or study outside of class will quickly fall behind. Feel free to message me with any other questions!
