Class Experience
Students will read the novel "The Outsiders" for this novel study. ISBN: 978-0-7362-3165-7 Description from the back of the novel: "No one ever said life was easy. But Ponyboy is pretty sure that he's got things figured out. He knows that he can count on his brothers, Darry and Sodapop. And he knows that he can count on his friends—true friends who would do anything for him, like Johnny and Two-Bit. But not on much else besides trouble with the Socs, a vicious gang of rich kids whose idea of a good time is beating up on “greasers” like Ponyboy. At least he knows what to expect—until the night someone takes things too far." Students will have assigned chapters to read each week. All communication is through the Outschool classroom. The teacher will record a video each week going over the weekly readings and assignments. The teacher will thoroughly discuss the assigned chapters read and provided handouts each week. The handouts the students are provided will be seen in the video and the teacher will discuss and provide a walk-through of all questions the students will be expected to answer that week. I find this helps students know what the teacher is looking for with their responses and lessen the stress for the student. Students should have all handouts sent to the teacher prior to the start of the following week through the Outschool classroom. Students are also required to to communicate with other students in the class about the novel through the Outschool classroom. Each week a discussion board question will be posted for students to reply to. Students will in turn reply to each others post as to build, and gain an understanding of the novel from a different viewpoint. Students are welcome to expand on ideas presented by other students as long as it is done so in a positive manner. Google Slides/Docs: (For access to digital files only) All of the assignments for this course are available in a digital version through Google Slides. This method allows students to type their answers directly onto the slides and use other features such as drag and drop. Once the student completes the assigned slides for the week they simply share the file back with the teacher for grading. These handouts will further the discussions that take place in the weekly videos. (There is no outside communication that takes place here. All communication takes place in the Outschool classroom.) Socrative.com: This is the digital option for students to take their quizzes online and received immediate feedback. Students do not have to register to use this program. I will provide the classroom code and it will take them straight to that week's quiz. (There is no outside communication with this program. This is strictly a quiz.) Quizlet: Vocabulary lists are provided each week. Students can study from the list or access Quizlet which has the vocabulary in digital flash cards to help the learner. (Once again there is no outside communication that takes place on this website. This is strictly a place for students to have fun practicing vocabulary.) *You do not have to use any of the digital options* Paper and Pencil: You can always stick with the basics and complete the homework by printing and writing. Assignments can then be photographed or scanned and sent to the teacher through the classroom here on Outschool.
