In this class, students will learn: Big Idea: pi is a constant number that is the ratio of circumference to diameter Vocabulary: pi, irrational number, circumference, diameter Skill: use the circumference and diameter of a circle to find pi; use pi to calculate the circumference or diameter of a circle We will start with a problem solving task designed to help students understand how the circumference and diameter of a circle are related. Then students will apply what they learned in order to find the circumference or diameter of given circles. We will then play a game of Kahoot to gain practice in this skill. **For the problem solving task, students will need to bring 2 circular objects, strings and scissors to class. I believe that all students can learn math to the highest level with enough support, perseverance and effort. In this class, as well as all of my others, I hope to help students to believe in themselves and to understand that being challenged in math is a good thing. This is how their brains grow! I will encourage participation throughout the class and students may answer out loud or using the private chat if they are not comfortable sharing out loud. I will also encourage participation through interactive activities that will engage all of the students.

Hello! My name is Carrie and I am excited to share my love of math with students here on Outschool. I believe that building students’ confidence in mathematics is key to their success in future classes. My goal is to help each student gain a full understanding of the prerequisite concepts taught in middle school which will then lead to confidence and success in their high school math courses. I want my students to know that math can be fun and rewarding. I’ve always related solving math problems to completing puzzles: they can be challenging but enjoyable to work through. I hope to share this belief with my students.
Previously, as a public school teacher, I taught several different age groups and subjects. I started in 4th grade and taught all four core subjects. After two years, I chose to try something new and moved to 6th grade. I spent 6 years teaching special education with a focus on math and science. While I loved working with students with special needs, I learned that my true passion was teaching math so I began to teach 7th grade mathematics. I continued to work with students with special needs in my collaborative classes but I also enjoyed working with students of varying levels, including advanced students. Eventually, I decided to leave the public school system and homeschool my high school aged daughter. I also taught my homeschooled nephew 6th grade math as well as pre-algebra. Currently, I am back in the public school system and teach 7th grade math again. I currently hold a Virginia teaching license and am licensed to teach Elementary (PK – 6), General Special Education (K – 12), and Middle School Math (6 – 8).
As an Outschool teacher, I offer full curriculum 6th and 7th grade FLEX math classes. These courses (4 units each) cover all of the topics required for 6th and 7th grade. These courses are designed to be a starting point & guide for homeschooling families. They are also useful for supplementing and enriching the math classes that students enrolled in public schools take.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy spending time with my family and our cat, reading, gardening, vacationing, and going to concerts and movies.
