This 5-day read-aloud class provides learners with graphic organizers, a thought-provoking story, and practice with reading aloud.

Class experience

US Grade 5 - 8
This class is taught in English.
Learners will:
build skills using current reading strategies
increase auditory comprehension skills
increase story-based vocabulary and sight word reading skills
build basic to next-level comprehension skills
enjoy stories with others
I love reading to students using auditory read-aloud as a teaching method. Podcasts, immersive reading, videos, and employee training videos all use auditory learning strategies. Auditory read aloud helps support struggling readers who may learn through hearing content. I teach general and special education by day. I provide supportive learning for all learners. I use simplified visuals with extra space and shorter directions. This helps reduce work/tasks anxiety and motivates learners who struggle with the 'see too much' on a page or slide. The daily tasks are organized to be predictable and direct.

My specialties are:
Breaking down the concepts
Providing discrete repetition
Visual directions
Skill chunking & chaining
Specialized instruction for learning challenges
Simplified structures for attention & processing
Giving positive feedback and cues
Homework Offered
Learners will be encouraged to talk about the story's content with others or to learn more through other sources. To keep pace, learners may need to read some pages outside of class, but it is not mandatory and we can fill in any missing details. Learners may need to finish the creative task (writing part) weekly. A daily performance activity can be worked on at their own pace. Completed work can be emailed for feedback. Learners will be provided slides to build note-taking skills, practice writing skills, and practice summarization skills.

Lois Lowry: The Giver (book)

Some learners prefer to use paper and markers to write. If this applies, they are welcome to download and print the slide deck.
This book sometimes makes the "list" of banned books. We skip chapter five (5) because the content is a little beyond the topics for class discussion. Students will not have any problems understanding the full novel. Chapter five will be highlighted in review. The content in the novel is meant to be thought provoking and I teach the content objectively. Readers are encouraged to build their philosophy perspectives and react to things they disagree with in the story.

The book is well written and appropriate for coming-of-age readers. The controversial issues in the story (selecting the strong) teach the skill of rejecting harmful societal rules. The lesson is to allow learners to question right or wrong from their point of view of growing up.
Lois Lowry: The Giver (book)

There is a movie. Learners can watch the movie (per parental/family permission) on their own.

I love to read aloud to students who love to hear content and stories. As an experienced professional who has taught in early childhood, special education, elementary and middle school, I enjoy sharing in learning and helping students...
