Class Experience

The Read Along & Discuss classes will introduce students to the sci-fi and fantasy genre. During the “Warrior Cats-Into the Wild” course, I will read the book aloud during class, and we will delve into literary concepts and themes such as the hero’s journey, loyalty, friendship, and honor.

The aim of the Read Along class is to help and encourage struggling readers, students with dyslexia, and other learning differences by having the teacher read the book aloud during class before discussion. Reading aloud benefits ELA (English Language Arts) by improving reading comprehension, building vocabulary, improving listening skills, boosting confidence, and providing exposure to proper sentence structure, all while minimizing the stress of decoding words on their own; essentially allowing them to fully engage with the story without the frustration of struggling to read the text themselves.

We will read the book aloud for the first part of class and then have an open discussion about the book to expose students to diverse text structures and literary elements while enhancing engagement and fostering a love for reading.

I will read the book aloud during class, but I also encourage students to read the book independently at home as well.

Learning Goals

Improve reading comprehension by cultivating active listening, which goes beyond just hearing words to truly internalizing them. Active listening allows students to collect information deeply enough to analyze and reflect upon it.
By listening to the story being read aloud, students can focus on understanding the plot and characters without the added burden of decoding each word.
