Class Experience

In this one time class, learners will create the simplest tabletop puppet show. They will make at least one stick puppet (if time allows, they will be encouraged to add more) and a set for their show. The sample show for the class will be Gingerbread Man, and the learners will make the main character puppet by drawing, decorating and cutting, then attaching a stick. To make the set, learners will use an old manila folder or a large pieces of paper, folded in two. It will be transformed with drawing, coloring, and some cutting as well. It is recommended that learners in this class already have some experience cutting with scissors. The resulting puppet theater can't stand up on its own, so it is best used by one or two players as a tabletop show to play with. The puppet theater provides tons of entertainment for the entire family even after the class is over, as new characters can be added, and new settings are simple to create.

Learning Goals

Learners will have the knowledge to continue creating more puppet shows of this kind, as they can make many variations of sets and character designs. I hope they will also have fun while making and playing with their puppet show.

Other Details

Supply List
We will need some paper to make characters, and at least one large sheet to make the set. Two old manila folders can be used instead of paper, one for the set, one for characters. We will also need craft sticks or plastic straws for the puppets, tape, a pencil, an eraser, scissors, crayons or colored pencils, and markers. Please make sure you are comfortable with scissors and tape. May be tearing tape in small piece and having them ready before class is a good idea for younger learners.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

My background includes professional illustration, printmaking, and an MA in Art History, but after many years of various jobs in the art world, I found that the best use of my knowledge and talent is teaching art to children. For the past 15 years, I have been a teaching artist at multiple programs and venues. Finally, five years ago I opened my own art studio for children, Canvas and Crayon. My curriculum, developed through many years of work, is a unique blend of teaching both technique and self-expression. I believe in providing my young students with all the knowledge they need to express their own ideas. Every year my students bring me joy and satisfaction as they grow and their skills develop. I also treasure the development of community as students work alongside one another and get to meet peers with similar interests and talents.
