Class Experience

Do you have a hand puppet gathering dust at the back of your wardrobe and you’d love to learn how to impress your friends and family with your new, exciting, puppetry skills?

Have you ever watched someone performing with hand puppets and wondered how do they do that?,

Maybe you want some support preparing a talent show piece or a hand puppet video?

In this class, you will learn the starting points of how to perform hand puppetry, or develop existing ones (for example from attending the small group hand puppet class). We will look at how your ‘puppet’ speaks, including all the technical mechanics involved in that. Through to how to get it to move and show emotion. We will also look at creating a relationship with your puppet to help show its character.

As the focus is on your hand or puppet for this class it can be a great class for frustrated camera-shy performers too!

Mrs. T will also demo her different types of hand puppets from sock puppets and mouth only, to whole hand, to hand and rod, and introduce the newest member to the collection 'Jasper'. She will discuss the pros and cons of each type and talk learners through how to progress between them.

Don’t worry you don’t need any prior puppet, or even acting/performing experience, to take part in this fun, active class. You don’t even need a hand puppet!!!! as you can use a sock or even just your hand for this class.

The class will start with an especially created warm-up (and an explanation of why it is really important to warm up certain key parts of your body when working with hand puppets) before learners will learn how to start at the very beginning and bring their ‘puppet’ to life, or they can develop their existing skills with this.

We will then move on to developing a puppet performance piece, including learning simple places to get script ideas from.

I look forward to seeing you in class…any hand puppets are of course very welcome!!
Learning Goals
Learners will receive instant, supportive feedback and tips to try. If they are creating a performance piece Mrs. T can also provide lots of ideas and starting points.

I am passionate about puppets and very much enjoy using them in some of my classes with my youngest learners and making puppet videos. I have built up quite a collection of different types of puppets and have attended numerous workshops to develop my skills.

I am a fully qualified, experienced teacher (BAPA, PGCE), professional actor, and director, who has also worked as many types of presenter.
