Learning Objectives: Students will learn how the West Africans lived, worked, and played before the area was disrupted by exploration, colonization, and enslavement of many of their people to the Americas. Learn about their familial, social, and political organizations and how they functioned. Teaching Format & Student Responsibilities: This will be a discussion & lecture-based class where I will also share relevant photos, videos, and/or slides to bring the content alive. Students will be urged to summarize their thoughts about what they have learned every week in a journal and take a quiz that will be graded and returned to them at the end of the course. Week 1: Students will learn about West Africa's political and governmental institutions. Its royal families and political stability. Week 2: Students will learn about the economic life in West Africa. How they viewed land ownership and related it to agriculture and the community. Learn what crafting skills were used to share culture and participate in trade. Week 3: Students will learn how the social organization of community, family and other relationships were structured in West African Cultures. Week 4: Students will learn how West Africans expressed themselves artistically through art, dance, storytelling, and more. Week 5: Students will learn what explorers and traders reported seeing in the West African region before their way of life was disrupted by colonization and slavery. Learn what African cultural traits exist today within the African Diaspora.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am very passionate about teaching African American Studies & The African Diaspora. I have a bachelor's degree in African American Studies & Sociology from Indiana University, which gave me scholarly insight and a great appreciation for the greatness of Africa. I have always had a strong interest in studying history and its effects on humans today.
