The 12 Most Frequent Spanish Verbs Are Irregular. Let's Use Them. Part 1.
Elisa | M. in Linguistics; M. in Education
This class teaches the verbs students would most often hear and use in any Spanish context: verbs Ser, Haber, and Estar. Some prior Spanish learning would help students take full advantage of this class.
This is how I've structured the class to make sure students have opportunities to interact with each other and also have individual and group time to learn. Students will learn the form and use of each verb following these steps: I'll share a document with the verb contextualized in sentences with each pronoun form. Student will guess the meaning. Based on the sentences they've just seen, we'll co-write the verb, conjugating each pronoun in present tense. I'll highlight the similarities and...
During this class, students will: Predict the meaning and use of the verbs Ser, Haber and Estar. Learn the meaning and form of these irregular verbs in present tense. Differentiate and use all the pronoun forms: yo, tú, él/ella/usted, nosotros, (vosotros), ellos/ellas/ustedes. Compare and contrast the meaning and use of the verbs while matching the translations in Spanish and English. Contextualize the verbs creating situations and using the verbs in writing and orally. Interact while speaking Spanish with other students in pairs and as a whole group through dialogues and games using the verbs.
Growing up in Spain, I studied English and French in school for years, and I can still remember having the feeling of not being prepared to have an accurate conversation when I had the opportunity to talk with native speakers. How could it be that after all those years of studying I couldn't have an age-appropriate conversation? The truth is that students are often exposed to language in contexts they will likely not experience until later in life and to vocabulary that is not commonly used in their daily lives. Experiencing this gap between book learning and real-world experience in addition to my degrees in foreign language acquisition and teaching enable me to help students get ready to sustain dynamic conversations outside the classroom. Being bilingual in English and Spanish and connecting with my students and their needs for over 20 years, I have the knowledge to explain how structures and language use are similar or different from their own language.
I'll provide students with files. Students just need to come to class ready to learn. :)
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
