Parental Guidance
Dear Parent/Guardian, We are excited to introduce your child to computer fundamentals in a hands-on, interactive environment. Over the course of 8 weeks, your child will learn essential skills such as file management, HTML basics, browsing, cybersecurity, and more, using a variety of offline and online tools. What Tools Will Be Used? Visual Studio Code (VS Code) VS Code is a powerful, free code editor used by developers around the world. It provides an interactive learning experience, enabling students to write, test, and run HTML code easily. No sign-up or personal information is required to use it, and all work is stored locally on your child's computer. Text Editors for Coding (Notepad++ for Windows, TextWrangler for Mac) For students on Mac or Windows who may prefer an alternative, Notepad++ (Windows) or TextWrangler (Mac) will be used as lightweight, offline text editors for writing basic HTML code. These tools also provide syntax highlighting, helping students to understand the structure of their code. Google Chrome Google Chrome will be used for browsing the web, performing research, and inspecting websites using the Chrome Developer Tools. Students will learn how to use Chrome for safe browsing, organize bookmarks, and explore websites with the help of browser tools. Local Web Server (Optional) In the final weeks, students may use a local server (such as XAMPP or Python’s built-in HTTP server) to view HTML files they have created in VS Code or a text editor. This step will be optional but provides a hands-on way to view and test web pages locally. Privacy and Security: VS Code and the other tools used in this class do not require accounts for students to use. All coding work is done offline or stored locally on your child’s computer. Google Chrome is used solely for browsing and inspecting web pages. No personal data is required, and the browser will not collect information beyond what is necessary for safe browsing. Any work done in class is stored locally on your child’s device and will not be shared or stored in the cloud unless students choose to upload their work to Google Drive or a similar service. Consent: By signing up for this class, you acknowledge and agree to the following: VS Code, Notepad++, and TextWrangler are the primary tools used in this class, and none require account sign-ups or sharing of personal information. Google Chrome will be used for browsing, research, and inspecting web pages using Chrome Developer Tools. All class activities will be offline or stored locally on your child’s device. The tools are designed with privacy and security protocols to ensure your child’s data remains safe. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the tools used or the class, please feel free to reach out to us.
