Class Experience

In this eight day, two week camp, students will get moving to eight different songs from the popular musical, Hamilton!

We will begin each class with a brief check in to see what kind of energy everyone is bringing with them, then a brief warm up to wake up our bodies and feel out the space, and then move on to learning a beginner dance combination set to about a minute of a song from the show. I will give a hint each week for the following day's song so that students have the opportunity to try and guess at the beginning of class! There may be repeat songs from my previous Hamilton classes, but they will always be new sections of the song and new combinations! Dance steps may include slides, kick ball changes, battements, isolations, step touches, grapevines, and many more.

We will take a short break at the halfway point of each class to hydrate and take a restroom break, as well as participate in a debate/discussion regarding the show (discussion topics include who the villain of the show is, why Hamilton is such a popular musical, etc.). In the last few minutes of each class, we will have a final performance of the dance of the day (anyone at home is welcome to watch if the student wishes!). Students can also have a crown or any other Hamilton style costumes accessible for our final performance!

On the last day of class, we will have our typical final performance and then a share where each student will show which dance move was their favorite to learn and do, and one thing they were proud they did during our time together.

*Please note that we dance to a small portion of one song each class, not in a formal concert or performance format, using my own choreography not featured in the production. We never do all of the songs within one week, only one each week, and never in the context of the show or using the technical elements related to Hamilton.

Learning Goals

By the end of our session, students will have a new knowledge of different types of dance steps used in traditional musical theater choreography, as well as how to piece together different portions of a combination. They will also develop their confidence in performing in front of others and using their body in a new athletic way. The final task of adding character or specific emotions to the dance helps them to give life to their movement and focus more on the storytelling than on getting every move perfect. Our discussion/debate period allows students to also communicate with others in their age group and become part of a community across the world. They might also learn a new song!

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Some Hamilton songs feature suggestive language and/or profanity. We will avoid these songs in class or use a clean version, but if students chose to listen to the soundtrack outside of class please be aware! Students should be in a space where they have room to move (seated with headphones is not advisable for this class!). Students should also wear sensible footwear (no open toe shoes or heels). Barefoot or socked feet are welcome! Please also have water, juice, lemonade, or some type of liquid nearby to stay hydrated throughout class (soda would not be the best choice to stay hydrated!).

The following is OPTIONAL: If the student chooses, they may have costume pieces that are in the style of Hamilton to put on for our final performance in the last five minutes of class. Please note the teacher will not appear in costume to make everyone feel comfortable, and remind everyone that you don't have to have a costume to have a good time!

Teacher expertise and credentials
As a baby, preschool, and elementary theatre and music teacher, I have worked with students ages 5 months to 12 years in this format. I believe that moving our bodies is a great way to keep kids active and discover new ways to be creative, while challenging them to remember specific movements in a piece of music keeps their brains sharp. I'm so eager to bring this particular class option to students as it keeps us moving during these unusual times, and lets them develop a relationship with other students all over the world over eight weeks. This is a unique class in that students have the chance to perform Broadway style dance combinations from their living rooms eight weeks in a row!
