Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 7
This self-paced course is designed to provide study skills and support to help learners become more independent and find academic success. My approach includes simple, manageable systems that remove the complication.

No prior knowledge or experience needed. This course is ideal for the 11-13 year old learner.

Because it is a Self-Paced course, we can take our time going through each lesson, affording your learner more time for processing and problem solving – which is a big advantage to learning through flexible schedule courses.

Recommended pacing is 6 weeks.

There are NO live meetings for this class. For each lesson students will have 4 tasks to complete.

Task #1 - I will post a new video lesson with a guided workbook. Learners will watch the video and complete the workbook page.

Task #2 - I will post a Think-About-It reflection question in our Outschool classroom, where learners will respond about our content for the week.

Task #3 - I will post a Problem Solving Challenge in our Outschool classroom, where learners will think critically to come up with the best advice based on our content for the week.

Task #4 - Learners will reflect on their learning for the week and develop their own action plan for implementing the new skills learned throughout the lesson. They will submit their plan using an online form (does not require an account or email)

Learners can complete each task at their convenience, but are expected to finish all 4 tasks before moving onto the next lesson.

Learners will receive personalized feedback from me at the completion of each lesson - allow up to 48 hours.

Learners will be able to track their progress through the course using our unique Gameboard, which can be printed or used digitally.

Here is our -Recommended- 6 Week Schedule:

What to do when you are assigned a project with little guidance? We will learn a simple system that will help us tackle any project – book report, science project, research paper, even presentations.

Week Five: Taking Tests
Get rid of test anxiety by approaching tests with a plan. We will explore a simple system that will help learners take on tests with confidence.

Week Six: Evaluating Your Progress and Finding Success
Learn how to evaluate progress, adjust your plan, and find success in meeting your goals!

As a teacher of 15+ years, I take great pride in seeing my students find success. Helping students learn how to learn is my passion! And I know how effective these simple strategies can be!

Learners will be engaged each week through: a pre-recorded video with interactive slides, along with a printable guided workbook, critical thinking prompts, problem solving scenario challenges, and self-reflection exercises to help them create a personalized action plan for implementing strategies. In addition, learners will track their progress through each task with our unique Gameboard (digital or print).

Our number one classroom rule is respect for all. I strive to create an environment where students feel comfortable to engage and extend their learning experience with appropriate participation.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
As a 6th grade teacher of 15 years, I have seen the challenges 10-13 year old learners face. This is an ideal age for learners to develop skills that will follow them throughout their academic career. I’ve had former students come back and tell me I prepared them more for college than any other secondary teacher. Helping students learn how to learn is my passion! These strategies have been proven to work, and I want to teach them to your learner to help them find success
