Class Title: Story Time with Charlie the Puppet and Reading Comprehension Game Ages: 4-7 One time class; 25 minutes long (I’d love to do this as a multi-day, weekly class if there is interest) The title of the story for this class is, “You Get What You Get” by Julie Gassman It is about little Melvin, who handles disappointments by throwing fits. His teacher’s class rule is, “You get what you get, and you don’t throw a fit,” which he really dislikes since it doesn’t allow him to behave as he does at home. In this class, I will use my sock puppet, Charlie, to add fun and interaction. To activate background knowledge and explain vocabulary, we will discuss what disappointments are. Charlie and I will interact with the learners as the story is read. The class learners will then become a team and compete against Charlie in a Quiz Show game, which has reading comprehension questions based on what we read. We will end by reminding the learners to remember and implement Melvin’s new saying, “You get what you get, and you don’t throw a fit” by showing appropriate behavior when disappointments come along. I will explain that it is good to express our feelings and not keep them bottled up, but we need to do it in an appropriate way. Lastly, I’ll encourage the learners to discuss with their parent(s) what is “appropriate” behavior to express their anger, sadness, and frustration since it might vary from family to family.
Learning Goals
Students will learn that throwing a fit is not an appropriate way to respond when they don't get their way and are disappointed. They will be encouraged to talk with their parents about what is an appropriate way to respond without keeping their frustration bottled up inside.
Students will become familiar with answering basic recall as well as higher level thinking questions to help with reading comprehension skills.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I earned a BS degree in Education from University of Maryland and started work on my Master's Degree to be a Reading Specialist at Johns Hopkins University, but didn't get to complete it once our children came along. However, I have taught children from preschool through 12th grade in a variety of subjects, including reading. Throughout the last few decades I've been teaching, reading stories with children, engaging them in the content, and teaching them thinking skills. I've been blessed to do this as a classroom teacher, tutor, and a mother. Reading to children is one of my favorite things to do! I have added Charlie and Charlotte, the puppets, in the last 2 years in my tutoring business to make reading even more enjoyable and fun. My students adore the puppets and enjoy learning with them.
