Let’s explore the ocean using STEAM (ages 5-9) Let’s take a virtual field trip to the ocean to explore its wonders using STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). Students will learn about each of the STEAM areas in a fun ocean-themed way during this interactive class. We will use technology to visit three underwater destinations, talk about engineering with all thing’s ocean engineering, brush up on our math like any good engineer would do, and learn how to draw a fun sea...
This class is taught in English.
Students will learn each of the STEAM topics as they go along with an ocean related theme: Science: Students will conduct a safe science experiment using common household supplies along with the teachers instruction. Technology: The teacher will use technology and talk about it with the students to visit 3 ocean locations virtually. Engineering: Ocean engineers are spotlighted in this lesson, students will see examples of what they do. Art: Students will learn how to draw a fun ocean creature. Math: Students will practice their math skills pertaining to counting and ocean themed word problems dealing with addition and subtraction.
Learners will need all the following supplies for this class: For the art lesson learners will need: • White paper • Colored pencils or crayons • Pencil • Black marker For the science experiment learners will need: • ¼ cup of milk • Liquid food coloring (any colors will work, but blue and green would be best) • One squirt of dawn dish soap in a bowl • Plate or tray with an edge that sticks up to hold liquid on it. • 3 q-tips
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
40 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Parents are encouraged to help students with the hands on science experiment that is conducted toward the end of class. This is a safe experiment that is easy to clean up and requires common household items.
