Class Experience

#superstar
How can a little piece of plastic get you into serious trouble?

It’s as easy as shop, swipe, and spend! Many young people use credit cards without knowing how they work and this lack of knowledge can lead to stolen information, lots of debt, and upset parents! Using engaging videos and handouts, students will learn how to avoid scams and penalties while getting the rewards and benefits of responsible credit card use. This class is interactive, not lecture-based, so students will have the opportunity to discuss, share experiences, and ask questions. I hope to see you in class BEFORE you use your parent's credit card or get one of your own.

All learners will leave the class with valuable resources about credit cards that they can refer to in the future.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how credit cards work and will be able to:
•	Discuss the important features of credit card use: high-interest rates, penalties, effects on your credit score, protection against stolen cards/fraud, rewards, etc.
•	Explain why paying the minimum amount on your credit card bill is not financially responsible.
•	Identify several advantages of using credit cards
•	Identify several disadvantages of using credit cards

As a tenured, certified Business Teacher I taught personal finance and classes on credit card use to young adults. I know that many students, ages 14-18, do not understand credit card basics (ex. that interest is charged on unpaid balances ). This lack of knowledge is unfortunate and can likely lead to young people making poor financial decisions and getting deep into debt. That's why it's critical for young adults to learn how to use credit cards responsibly BEFORE they use a parental credit card or get one of their own.

Based on my extensive experience teaching this subject, I know how to make it interesting and memorable. I use video clips and engaging handouts to make the content easy to understand and remember. This class is interactive, not lecture based, so students will have the opportunity to discuss, share experiences, and ask questions.
