Understanding money matters is an essential life skill. Join us for this 8-class, weekly financial success series, where students learn a broad overview of financial literacy concepts and practical habits of financial wellness. The content covered includes discussion of delayed gratification, spending restraint and starting early to benefit long-term financial success. Through a presentation format and proven examples, students will gain insight into best-practices for long-term financial health. Each week focuses on a separate aspect of finances including spending habits, the cost of living, credit & debt, budgeting, financial goal-setting and saving & investing for the future. Please refer to the class syllabus for detail about each lesson, designed to educate and motivate students aged 13-18. Classes include brief homework assignments encouraging students to take what they’ve learned and apply it to their own money matters.
Learning Goals
Through a presentation format and practical examples, students will learn healthy financial habits, as well as costly pitfalls to avoid.
Students will also learn how their behaviors impact their long-term financial wellness.

Understanding & Owning Our Own Money Matters
In the first session, students will begin to understand money matters as an essential life skill and how it impacts all areas of our life.
Topics include:
What exactly is “financial literacy”? Overview of components of personal finance and how we will explore topics over the series.
Learning from others: getting in front of common financial mistakes, regrets. Common pitfalls to avoid.
The expert myth, motivation for financial personal responsibility.

Lesson 2:
Consumer Culture, Emotional vs. Rational Spending, Social Media Pressure
In this session, students will learn about the #1 money mistake people make.
Topics include:
The impact of consumer culture on spending habits and debt levels.
A discussion of emotional vs. rational spending decision-making.
The pressure of social media & the cost of comparing ourselves to others.

Cost of Living, Income & Taxes, Wants vs. Needs
In this session, students will explore the concept of living within, above and below one’s means.
Topics include:
The realities of the cost of living, gross vs. net income and taxes deducted from our paycheck.
Prioritizing expenses, understanding wants and needs, and the value of spending trade-offs.

Power of the Monthly Budget: Telling Our Money Where to Go
In this session, students will learn about the power of the monthly budget.
Topics include:
What is a budget? Why is it important?
Budgeting basics & common challenges/solutions.
Walk through the elements of a monthly budget: step-by-step.
Importance of savings and the emergency fund & paying oneself first.
Overview of basic banking services/apps: saving & checking accounts, debit and credit cards.
