Come join us as we solve the code to find our missing item. What kind of code? The phonics code that shows how each sound in a word is written with specific letters. Help choose the right letters to make the words and solve the code! In this small group class students will work together to build words with letter tiles. Students will both have a physical set of letter tiles in front of them from a printed resource I provide and will use an online format in a google slide that I will share via screenshare. This action of physically moving letter tiles to make words helps students develop their letter sound correspondence and their ability to hear individual sounds that make up words (phonemic awareness). This class is highly interactive and students will each have turns to help change words and read the word they create. For example, if we have the word "pat" and we need to change it to "pet", what needs to change? What letter do we need to switch so that our word now says "pet"? This class is best for students who already know most of the letter sounds and are beginning to read, often in kindergarten or first grade. They will learn how these sounds make words and how changing only one sound at a time can make a new word. Week of February 3: Focus on making words with short a and i and introduce "th". (example: that) Week of February 17: Focus on making words with short a and i and introduce "ch" (example: chin) Week of February 24:: Focus on making words with short a, i and introduce o (example: rob) Week of March 3: Focus on making words with short i, and o and introduce "sh" (example: shop) Week of March 10: Focus on making words with short o and introduce short e (example: pet) Week of March 17: Focus on making words with short a, e and o and introduce "ng" (example: song) Week of March 24: Focus on making words with short a, o and introduce u (example: such) Week of March 31: Focus on making words with short a, o and u and introduce "ck" (example: rock) Week of April 7: Focus on making words with short a, i, u and introduce “qu” (example: quick) NO CLASS APRIL 14 Week of April 21: Focus on words with short e, i, u and when to use “ck” or “ch” (example: chick) Week of April 28: Focus on words with “qu,” “th,” and “ck” (example: path) Week of May 5: Focus on making words with short a, i, and u and introduce “k” vs. “ck” (example: kick) If you are unsure if this class is the right class for your child, please message me so that I can help!
Learning Goals
Students will develop reading and spelling skills, letter sound correspondence, and phonemic awareness. They will practice using all of the short vowel sounds and several digraphs to build three and four letter words.
