Class experience
This is an ongoing emotional awareness class for elementary age students and those for which this learning would be developmentally approriate. We will use stories, games, hands-on activites, and projects to learn about feelings and emotions. We spend time learning about the different emotions and associated feelings to really gain an understanding of how our bodies respond and what we can do when our emotions become too big. We will explore the concept that we can have more than one emotion...
As a special education teacher, I have been highly trained in social emotional learning and de-escalation strategies along with decades of using these strategies in my classrooms. I have worked with students with a variety of special needs, including Autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome, Specific Learning Disability, ODD, TBI, etc. Additionally, I am the parent of 4 children with special needs and emotional learning has been an ongoing subject area, even as my oldest children have reached adulthood.
Each week, I will post a list of needed materials for upcoming classes. Most things will be what you can find around the house. I will also provide printouts that will be used during class sessions with directions about anything that needs to be completed beforehand. Any prep work will be minimal.
Students may need help with some of the preparation of hands-on materials and may require supervision with cutting, clay/playdough usage, and other project-based activities.
We will be using materials from the Little Spot Curriculum in this class with permission from Diane Alber, the author. You can find information about the curriculum online. Additionally, the books are available on Kindle and free if you have Kindle Unlimited. When I found this curriculum by Diane Alber, I was very impressed with the depths of knowledge it covers while making the concepts understandable, hands-on, and fun. I immediately contacted her knowing I needed to integrate this curriculum into this class I was planning. I was so excited that she approved my desire to bring Little Spot to more students. I hope you and your children enjoy it as much as I have.
