This is the second class a three part series to cover formal writing techniques for beginners. *Learners must have completed Level 1 or have permission from the teacher.* Students will learn how to take notes with key word outlines, write their own fables from outlines, and author narrative stories with story sequence charts. Not only will students gain foundational writing skills, but they will also explore stylistic elements to embellish their original works. Additionally, students will have the chance to improve their public speaking skills by presenting both oral reports from key word outlines and written works in a small, encouraging group. Likewise, students will also have the opportunity to gain audience listening skills while providing constructive feedback to their classmates based on writing techniques covered in class. *Students are expected to be independent readers to be successful in this class. No prior writing instruction is necessary. Students with some beginner writing experience who would like to gain a formal writing process will also benefit from this class. **All students must purchase the IEW student workbook "All Things Fun and Fascinating" by Lori Verstegen. See link in "Materials" section below. Class Itinerary: Unit 3: Stories from Around the World Week 1 - Lesson 9, Borrowing a Conflict Unit 4: Summarizing References Week 2 - Lesson 10, Busy Beavers Week 3 - Lesson 11, A Bird with a Tasty Nest Week 4 - Lesson 12, Honeybees Week 5 - Lesson 13, Army Ants Week 6 - Lesson 14, Amazing Animal Homes Unit 5: Writing from Pictures Week 7 - Lesson 15, The Kite Ride Week 8 - Lesson 16, The Fishing Trip
Learning Goals
The main goal is for all students to gain a foundational writing process and stylistic elements to guide them in getting their thoughts on paper in an organized manner. These skills will help students grow towards more challenging writing assignments with improved confidence.
