Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 2
For as cold as snow is, the silent sound of it and each unique flake that falls warms me -- completely!

When we first gather for class, introductory time will be spent explaining the definition of an acrostic poem and a mini, self-made acrostic will be read and modeled. We will spend time in open, respectful dialogue touching upon our connections to snow and snowflakes (this may be through the five senses, real-life experiences, stories read that took place within snowy weather, media elements depicting snow, etc.) and practice brainstorming a few 'snowflake details' that would fit our given acrostic letters.

*** NOTE: ***

-- Learners that are interested in this cozy, acrostic poem writing course should be able to write phrases independently. While the brainstorming element is welcome to be an open dialogue among teacher and peers, the writing aspect is an individual one.
-- While there will naturally be space within the teacher-made snowflake template for acrostic phrases, there will also be room for those learners who would like to extend their acrostic poem ideas into lengthier, sentence forms!

Learning Goals

Learners will understand the definition of an acrostic poem, and use their creativity and natural connections to create their own 'SNOWFLAKE' acrostic.
