The main focus of this course is to establish a solid foundation in music reading, performance, technique, and aural skills specifically for the drums. Each lesson begins with an invigorating warm-up session that incorporates a variety of exercises. These exercises know as rudiments and stick control exercises are taught to each student to help increase there skills as they develop as a drummer. Students with drum-sets or drum pads are encouraged to join and will be given level appropriate exercises to join in on the ongoing lessons. After the warm-up, the lesson material is presented to the students through engaging activities like call and response exercises or lessons sourced from a dedicated book for drum-set. Students with drum-pads will be able to play along with the rhythms as well. Throughout the course, I adopt an interactive teaching approach that encourages student participation through discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and fostering their creative expression. I also ensure that students receive clear demonstrations of each task so they can confidently perform them on their own. I am a firm believer in being able to demonstrate at a professional level what you are teaching. Each exercise is tailored to meet the needs of the individual student. We will use the rhythms and grooves we learn to play along with a song at the end of each class.
Learning Goals
Basic Technique and Fundamentals: Develop a solid foundation in drumming by mastering proper hand and foot technique, stick control, posture, and understanding basic rhythm patterns.
Rhythmic Accuracy: Improve your ability to play rhythms accurately and precisely. Work on timing, subdivisions, and maintaining a consistent tempo.
Coordination and Independence: Enhance your coordination skills by practicing drumming patterns that require different limb movements simultaneously. Develop independence between your hands and feet to play complex rhythms.
Groove and Feel: Learn to create a strong, steady groove by focusing on dynamics, accents, and playing with a sense of feel. Explore different genres and styles to develop your own unique playing style.
Musicality and Creativity: Cultivate your musicality by experimenting with different drumming patterns, fills, and improvisation. Explore ways to express yourself and add your personal touch to the music.
Reading Drum Notation: Develop the ability to read drum notation and understand drumming symbols and terminology. This skill will allow you to learn new songs and communicate with other musicians effectively.
Performance Skills: Gain confidence in performing in front of others. Practice playing along with recorded music or in live settings to develop stage presence, communication with other musicians, and maintaining consistency during performances.
Collaborative Skills: Participate in group drumming exercises to improve your ability to play with others, follow cues, and contribute to a cohesive musical experience
Depending on the level of the student, exercises are modified so everyone has a positive drumming experience!
