A fun and relaxed class that encourages new writers to practice their skills. Learners will get to know one another in this ongoing class and form a community of new writers! Each session will begin with show and tell based on a weekly theme. Learners will tell us about what they have brought to share with the group. I will encourage questions and conversation to help spark ideas for writing. Next, learners will participate in a shared writing with me. I will model sounding out words using phonics-based spelling, writing with correct letter formation, and using conventions including spacing, capitalization, and punctuation. Then, learners will begin the independent writing process. They will orally plan their writing and write about what they have brought to share. I will provide tools to support emerging writers including an alphabet chart, mini word wall, and editing checklist. I will check in and support individual writers throughout this time. Last, students will share what they have written with the group. The group will be encouraged to share compliments and suggestions for improvement! This class is best for students who have a strong knowledge of letter sounds, basic handwriting skills, and the ability to segment words into individual sounds (cat = c-a-t). Don't hesitate to reach out if you're unsure if this is the right class for your child! 6/20-6/26 : Someone you Love (picture) 6/27-7/3 : Something from Nature 7/4-7/10 : Pet or Favorite Animal (toy, stuffed animal, etc.) 7/11-7/17 : Favorite Toy 7/18-7/24 : Lego Creation (or another type of building material!) 7/25-7/31 : Craft You Made 8/1-8/7 : Favorite Movie (draw a picture about it, bring a DVD, bring a related toy, etc.) 8/8-8/14 : Something Noisy! Texas Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Hello there! I’m Ms. Davis. I’m here to talk books and help kids to discover (or celebrate!) a love for reading and writing! My classes are primarily discussion-based, but also include explicit instruction, hands on practice, and fun group activities. I offer writing classes that include plenty of social time to share work and connect with peers. I also teach reading classes and book clubs that fall somewhere between structured tutoring and just hanging with friends, talking books.
I’m a passionate and intentional teacher with significant experience teaching virtually, in private tutoring settings, and in a public school. I’m certified in Texas for early childhood through 6th grade with additional GT and ESL endorsements. I currently tutor students K-5 and have 8 years experience teaching grades PreK-4 in a public school.
One of my great strengths as a teacher is my enthusiasm for books and extensive knowledge of children’s literature. My mom is a librarian - and it shows! I love reading children's literature and have a long list of favorites. Recommending the right book at the right time for a student is one of my favorite parts of being an educator!
Another strength is my commitment to supporting and educating the whole child. I regularly integrate social and emotional learning into my classes and believe that learning to be a kind and confident person is as important as learning to read and write. Teaching is so much more than delivering content, it's supporting learners in becoming the best versions of themselves!
