It is intended for ages 11-13 and best suited for 6th-8th grade middle school students who are wanting to strengthen their writing skills and need extra support and help from a teacher with writing an essay. Students will... 1. Students will improve their understanding of prepositional, appositive, gerund, and infinitive phrases 2. Students will write phrases with correct punctuation. 3. Students will use phrases to incorporate variety into their writing. 4. Improve their understanding of simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences. 5. Identify the differences between dependent vs. independent clauses. 6. Identify the difference between clauses and phrases. 7. Write simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences with correct punctuation. 8. Use different sentence structures to incorporate variety into their writing. 9. Identify and demonstrate the basic components of an essay. 10. Effectively write and revise a multi-paragraph essay.
I have a B.S. in English Education and English Literature with over ten years of classroom teaching experience.
Homework Offered
Optional extra practice activities will be provided during class and/or on the Outschool classroom. Students may choose to use time outside of class to work on these. During the last two weeks of the course, students will write and revise a multi-paragraph essay, which may require 1-2 hours outside of class time.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class

The teacher will use Google Slides for screen sharing purposes only. (Students are not expected to have a Google account.) We will be using the online program Kahoot to review skills learned. Students may complete the Kahoot activities without signing up for an account. It is free, and students should use their first name only when joining the review game.
