In this class, students will learn to code one game. Which game we code depends on the students in the class and what they vote for. Priority for choices given to students who have previously taken the class so they are not coding the same game again. Below are some of the choices (I am adding more games all the time) that students can pick from. As a teacher for over 20 years, I have been using Scratch with students for many years. This class is best for beginning and intermediate Scratch students who are at least a bit familiar with Scratch, know how to use a computer, and are comfortable with mouse controls. If learners have never used Scratch before there may be a bit of a learning curve, but older student often are able to navigate this well. Younger students can feel overwhelmed by keeping up with a class, but Scratch uses drag-and-drop coding so it is very accessible for all levels of ability. Before class, create a free Scratch account and be logged in when the class begins. You will have to find the system that works best for students to be able to see my shared screen and their own Scratch window for their projects. It is also best if they can share their screen so that I can help them troubleshoot any code that is not working and they can share with their classmates what they have done. *Maze game! Students will learn how to control a sprite using the arrow keys, draw a maze to be the background, and can challenge themselves to make their maze unique in different ways. *Catch Me If You Can: a game which is based on the old whack-a-mole games. *Don't Touch the Lava: a paddle and ball game where you keep the ball from hitting the bottom of the screen where the "lava" is. *Code a target shooting game with three sprites we are coding, two of which we have drawn ourselves. *Eat the Cheese: a game with a cat is chasing a mouse around as he tries to gobble up as much cheese as possible. How much can you eat before you get caught by the cat? Students can choose their own animals also. *Platformer game

Teacher expertise and credentials
Join me on a journey of creativity and fun! I have been a teacher in California for nearly 20 years and am currently an independent study teacher. My most common review so far has been praising my patience, and I really care that all students succeed in my classes.
Scratch courses
I will be offering various Scratch courses for students to learn the basics of Scratch and how to make games and projects. This has unexpectedly become my niche with Outschool, and I have a great time guiding kids through the process of coding games and creative projects on Scratch.
Writing classes
One of my passions is helping students work on their writing skills. I also love integrating creative writing with technology because I think allowing students to practice their creative writing while learning more about technical skills, such as creating slideshow presentations, enables them to build skills that they will take into the workforce in a fun, engaging way.
I received my degree in English from Bryn Mawr College in '98 and went on to earn my teaching credential from Dominican University in '02.
I taught as a classroom teacher for 11 years, at different times having every grade from 1st through 5th, but primarily teaching 2nd and 3rd. I currently work at a blended independent study school with students in grades K-8, meeting with them individually about their homeschool learning. I also teach an enrichment class for 7th graders on campus.
I live on a sheep ranch near the coast and love getting out into nature when I can. I truly love working with students and can't wait to work with you!
