Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
In this fast paced and highly interactive one-time class we will learn about snakes. Students will explore their behaviors, ecological roles, and fascinating traits!

We will discuss the biology and evolution of snakes. We will look at snakes in general and then examine King Cobras, Yellow Bellied Sea Snakes, and Reticulated Pythons. Learners will be introduced to biology concepts such as ectothermic, habitat, and nocturnal and diurnal.

We will investigate questions such as:

Why did snakes lose their legs?
How are snakes related to other reptiles?
What kinds of aquatic snakes are there?

The class is lecture and discussion based. Learners will view and participate in a presentation full of images and some videos. They will have the opportunity to ask questions and think critically about snakes!

Hello! My name is Arwen, and I am absolutely passionate about space science, the environment, and teaching! I offer courses about the solar system, planets, natural processes, soil, and the environment. I am a NASA Solar System Ambassador and science author. My Master's is in Space Science, and I have undergraduate degrees in Agricultural Ecology, and Natural Resource Management. I am currently working on a doctorate in STEM education.

I believe curiosity and learning are human instincts. I try to honor that by asking the learners lots of questions and encouraging them to think about information in new ways.

When not teaching, you can find me hosting "Found in Space: A Science Podcast for Kids and Teens" or playing Dungeons and Dragons and exploring the Southwest with my three homeschooled kiddos and our big, fluffy orange cat named Moose!

I like to keep class sizes small so each learner can get individualized and full attention. Please feel free to reach out.
