During this course, students will be working with phonemic awareness, hearing read alouds, sounding out 3 sound (CVC) words, learning a total of 5 new sight words per day, and reading simple sentences. In addition to this, learners will also be exposed to various digraphs. This instruction will help them to successfully decode text that has these phonics skills. Meeting 1: Short Vowel A words, sight words (a, the, can, run, play), and digraph wh. Meeting 2: Short Vowel O words, sight words (go, and, big, to, look), and digraph ch. Meeting 3: Short vowel I words, sight words (I, in, is, it, little), and digraph th. Meeting 4: Short vowel U words, sight words (two, you, me, my, funny), and digraph sh. Meeting 5: Short vowel E words, sight words (red, we, see, blue, up), and digraph ck. Meeting 6: Review all short vowels, sight words, and digraphs. Digraph Scavenger Hunt. Each course will be interactive, and have opportunities for students to respond to the teacher. After teaching 6 and 7 year olds for 14 years, I know students learn best in a comfortable setting, so I don't expect students to sit perfectly still the entire time. I will be incorporating movement, outside learning videos, etc...to keep their attention. ****The mute button will not be used unless absolutely needed. However, if background noise becomes problematic I may use the mute function. If I use the mute function, your child will need to be able to unmute themselves when requested. (Or you can be available with your child to help them unmute.) In order to be ready for this class, students MUST KNOW all letters and sounds. We will be using sound knowledge to begin reading.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Tennessee Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Master's Degree in Education from Western Governor's University
Hi!
My name is Mrs. Leslie. I have been an Educator for 16 years. I spent my first thirteen years as a first grade teacher, and my last three years have been as a third grade English Language Arts Teacher. I am especially passionate about teaching struggling readers, and those readers and writers that just need a little boost of confidence to be successful. I received my education from Austin Peay State University where I earned my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. After teaching in the classroom for a few years, I decided that I wanted to return to school to pursue a Master's Degree. I received my Master's of Science Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Western Governors University.
I serve as a Mentor Teacher at my school to assist other teachers in their classroom. In addition to this, I have led several Professional Development courses for other teachers.
My belief is that ALL students can learn and grow! If students are given explicit, intensive, high quality instruction in their area of deficit, have a good at home support system, and have an "I can" attitude, they will learn and be successful.
My hobbies include reading, traveling, spending time with my family, and two fur babies, and catching up on sleep! I look forward to teaching your child!
