Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
In this weekly course, your upper elementary student will learn how to write like a pro! The class sizes are small (maximum 4 per class) to ensure one-on-one feedback and guidance. I also encourage the students to give their peers feedback. Each week we will focus on a different type of writing: opinion, informational, and narrative. Please refer to the Learning Goals section for the list of specific writing standards. Grammar, spelling, and public speaking will also be naturally integrated into the lessons.

*****Please have a WRITING NOTEBOOK specifically for this class. This will help students keep up up with their writing and not loose their papers. It will also be a great way to refer back to past writings to see their improvement.

Each week will have the same schedule:

Pre-Writing: Please print the documents and start the brainstorming web. *Some weeks may include pre-writing research. This is to be done before the first day of class.

Day One: The writing prompt will be introduced and the students will review or finish their brainstorming web. Next, we will start the graphic organizer by writing the introduction, discussing transition words, and write the closing. Students will be provided with a checklist for their rough draft. *Their homework is to finish writing their rough draft on the graphic organizer.

Day Two: The students will share their rough draft and be given feedback from the teacher. Students will make revisions and edit their writing with a colored pen. *Their homework is to rewrite their final essay referring back to the edits and checklist.

Day Three: The students will present their final writing. Students will reflect and share the things they like about their essay and set a goal to improve their writing for the next week.

Classes with low enrollment might have time to go to Nearpod for word work activities at the end of day 3. This will include interactive sight word, spelling, grammar, and vocabulary activities.

Week of September 29: informational
Week of October 6: narrative
No meeting for the week of October 13
Week of October 20: personal narrative
Week of October 27: opinion/persuasive

Session topics will be learner-directed and dictated weekly due to current events.

George Orwell said, “If you cannot write well, you cannot think well; if you cannot think well, others will do your thinking for you.”
