Ready for Reading! Level 5 On-going English & Language Arts Skills - Ages 10-12

These classes are based on 5th & 6th grade common core standards. This ongoing class will meet twice a week as we practice reading fluency, reading strategies, comprehension, and language skills including grammar, vocabulary, and spelling.

READING - LITURATURE -
Key Ideas and Details:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.2 Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.3 Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact).

I have a degree in elementary education and have experience with elementary grades 1st-5th. I taught 3rd grade for 2 years in the public school system. 
About every two weeks students will have a writing prompt for homework that corresponds to our reading passage for the week. Optional homework could include reviewing spelling words, vocabulary, and grammar for each week.

In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
The students will be assessed through individual participation and group discussion.
1 hour 40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Nearpod will be used on day 2 of class for vocabulary, spelling, and grammar games. Students will follow the link posted in the zoom chat box. It will take them directly to the site and they will write their name and join the session.
