The upper elementary grades (3rd, 4th, and 5th) are an incredible time of learning and growth. During this class, we will embrace this important year of learning through various reading, writing, and creative endeavors to help us grow in our knowledge. This class is just one portion of a full year’s curriculum; be sure to explore the links at the bottom of this description for the classes that complete the year. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀? 1. Mrs. Bombard is a certified elementary educator in Florida (formerly certified in Georgia and New York) with an M.Ed. in Reading Instruction. During 10+ years of teaching in elementary schools in the three states, Mrs. Bombard’s focus has been on developing the knowledge of how to read while also facilitating a love of reading. One of Mrs. Bombard’s favorite books is “Front Desk” by Kelly Yang because of how it takes the author's life and experiences as a young immigrant and makes them relatable and understandable to young readers.
It will be expected that learners will read a book of their choice outside of class. Each week, on Monday, a Reading Choice Board will be provided to support this independent reading. This choice board is 100% optional but is provided to support the goals of our class. I do offer a wonderful complement to our class: Book Club for Upper-Elementary Readers (https://outschool.com/classes/book-club-for-upper-elementary-readers-PwoJfpbU#usuHnHC1IY) that some families may opt to participate in.
All handouts will be provided via the Outschool classroom. Families should have access to a printer to prepare these handouts for their learners. Learners will need access to books to read each day as part of their independent reading challenge time. These can be physical copies of books (the library is your friend), audiobooks, ebooks, etc.
𝗙𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: Learners will be able to practice and share their fluency with Mrs. Bombard. Each learner will receive personalized feedback to help them build their fluency. 𝗩𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗯𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘆: Each Friday there will be an optional, 10-question, vocabulary quiz. 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻: Each day there will be an independent reading challenge with most days including a hand-out to accompany their reading. These handouts can be used by parents to assess comprehension or can be shared with Mrs. Bombard for her feedback and guidance.
No live meetings, and maybe some time outside of class.
