Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten
This class is designed to improve basic reading skills for students. I will be focusing on phonics to build their understanding. Students would be working with me to grow their skills. Each class, we will review old concepts and then add new ones. Students will be listening to and demonstrate their own understanding of the concepts. Students must be able to say the alphabet and connect the name of the letter with the letter. They do not need to know the sounds that go with the letter although it would help if they had some knowledge of this. Over time, we will continue to diagrams, chunk sounds, syllables and so on.

Each lesson will start with letter/sound recognition; this will be part review and part new letters. I will give the student a letter and they will tell me the name of the letter and the sound that goes with it. Students will then practice reading short words using those letters, "tapping out" any word they don't recognize. They must then read sentences or stories that will include the learned materials. During the second half of the session, they will be writing instead of reading. I will start by giving them a sound and they will write the letter that goes with it (this is best done on a white board but paper works). Next, I will give them a word to write, and finally I will give them sentences to write.

Learning Goals

Students will learn the sounds of all letters and digraphs. They will put the letters/sounds together to both read and write words. They will learn and practice writing to help with their understanding and memorizing.

Each lesson the class will learn new letters, digraphs, chunk sounds and syllables - both reading and writing - until students know them all.
