Class Experience

Welcome to Reading Detectives! Join this fun, interactive class for GRADES 4 and 5. We will use games, word sorts, online letter tiles, dry-erase boards, and decodable stories/poems. Working in a small group of 3-5 learners, we’ll have fun learning advanced phonics as we develop the phonics skills needed to read multi-syllable words fluently. We'll blend sounds, chunks, and syllables to read, spell, and write multi-syllable words and increase fluency. Each week, we'll practice 4th and 5th grade sight words in isolation or in a fluency passage.

PARENTS: Learners in this class should know their consonant sounds and short vowel sounds."Reading Detectives" is a streamlined class that teaches Advanced Phonics and Reading fluency. It's designed to successfully build your student's word-decoding and sound-blending skills in order to read, spell, and write Multi-Syllable words more fluently and accurately. This class for 4th and 5th graders is especially helpful for students who are struggling in Reading or who haven't yet developed a good Phonics foundation while in grades K-3. These skills are very important as students begin reading multisyllabic words in the content areas of Science and Social Studies.

While blending, segmenting, reading, spelling, and writing words, your child will learn the Advanced Phonics patterns that form the building blocks of the English language. Learners in GRADES 4 and 5 will continue practicing consonant/short vowel sounds and consonant blends/digraphs, while learning long vowel teams, vowel diphthongs, word chunks, word endings, prefixes, suffixes, and soft consonants. Each week, we will focus on a specific advanced phonics pattern to build words, decode them by syllables, and read multi-syllable words fluently.

For each long vowel sound and diphthong, we will learn a Key Sentence to use as a mnemonic device. These sentences help learners remember and recall the many spellings of each long vowel sound (e.g. long /o/ sound as spelled in boat, joke, toe, show, no).

While learning grade-level sight words we will also learn irregular words that don’t follow the phonics rules. For fun, we'll practice these words in games and decodable short stories/poems (provided as printables for use in class to practice fluency). Together, we’ll read a guided-reading passage or play a game to practice the sight words or vowel pattern we learned during class. Because practicing the same, short passage daily improves reading fluency and recognition of phonics patterns and sight words, students can use these printable passages for quick fluency practice between classes.

Come and join this ongoing, small-group class at any time! I can't wait to see you in my class!

**NOTE: PLEASE CHECK THE CLASSROOM prior to each class for any printable(s) needed for the upcoming class.

YOUR STUDENT CAN SAVE ALL PRINTABLES in a binder or pocket folder, to refer back to while reading at home or school. These printables are also great for referencing when learning to spell more long vowel words. He/She can even add new words to the lists.
