Class Experience

In this ongoing public speaking class, students will learn different ways we engage in public speaking, and how we speak in public. We will take 5 main skills, then use an activity to reinforce what we have learned. In the 6th class of the session, we will combine all of these points and practice them all together.

The points of public speaking that will be discussed are:
Day 1- Facial Expressions (Smiling). Activity: Getting to Know You Questions.
Day 2- All About Voices. Activity: Show and Tell Favorite Toys.
Day 3- Keeping papers/books down when reading to the class. Activity: Drawings.
Day 4- Making sure to stay on topic. Activity: Question and Answer game.
Day 5- Keeping Eye Contact with a crowd. Activity: Show and Tell Favorite Books.
Day 6- Review of previous 5 classes, learning the connection between all the skills, and how each of the skills we learned all work together to make a good presentation. Activity: Show and Tell the Student's choice.

Each class takes one topic at a time. We will take the first half of class to learn the lesson. The second half of class is the activity for the day. During this portion of each class, appropriate evaluation and critique will be given to students to make sure they are understanding the skill learned that day. In the last class, when all skills are combined, students will have one final activity to showcase what they learned throughout the entire course. Critique will then be given on all 5 skills learned.

At the end of each class, the activity for the next class will be discussed in order to prepare the students for anything that may be needed. For example, at the end of class 1, I will talk about the show and tell we will have in class 2. I will also put messages in the Outschool classroom with reminders of what is needed for the following class.

This class is not designed to help students learn English, or to learn how to make conversations with their peers. This class helps students stand up in front of a group of people and give presentations, whether in front of their class at school or in formal settings.

No experience necessary.

Parental Guidance
Topics we may use for public speaking practice are our favorites (animals, colors, hobbies, etc), summer plans, vacations we've taken, or family stories. Each student will get a chance to speak in a round robin fashion in order to practice the skills learned in class.
Supply List
Supplies needed for this class are commonly found around the house: paper, pencils, crayons, a favorite book, and a favorite toy/object. A message will be sent in the classroom laying out which supply is needed for that day's class.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have been actively public speaking since the age of 12. I was in a youth group that required public speaking of some form every time we met. Then in college, public speaking was a heavy part of my degree- Communications.
