Class Experience

Does your student spend hours drawing on their iPad or android tablet? We can use these devices as we learn more about the elements and principles of design in art. Your child can get a rich art curriculum, with different brushes and mediums - all from their tablet or iPad! In the "Drawing School" series we will explore different elements of drawing. In "Value and Shading" we will look at light sources and how shadows are cast, the different types of shadows and highlights and how to "get it right" when sketching.
**This class assumes an understanding of whatever digital app your student works in! I will not be teaching the apps in this class, rather USING the apps to explore art history through the various mediums and methods they provide** if your student needs to learn how to use Procreate or Ibispaint, please see my Intro series before enrolling in the "Drawing" classes!
Through the eight weeks of our study of value we will define value and work with different means of creating value. WE will work with hatching, cross hatching, stippling and scribbling as we explore different value scales. Additionally, we will look at abstract value composition.
Week 1: Stippling, hatching, cross hatching and scribbling value charts, Stippling practice while changing light sources.
Homework: Same three objects with hatching, cross hatching and scribbling. Symmetry bug
Week 2: Cast shadow, form shadow, reflective highlight with shading, stippling, hatching. Use these principles to draw from reference photo,
Homework: Finish classwork, Symmetry bug
Week 3:Shading shiny objects and blending.
Homework: Symmetry bug and shiny object
Week 4: Value in objects Dark to light - adding volume and dimension with charcoal (available on the drawing apps)
Homework: Finish classwork, add color, symmetry bug,
Week 5: Shading exercise with emphasis on reflective light and cast shadow using artist crayon (available in drawing app)
Homework: Finish classwork, bug symmetry
Week 6: Micrography
Homework: Finish classwork, symmetry bug,
Week 7: Abstract Value Composition, blending and mandalas
Homework: Finish classwork, symmetry bug
Week 8: Mandala with line for value. Color optional.
Homework: Bug symmetry, finish classwork.
Learning Goals
Students learn about the element of value through creating value scales using blending, stippling, hatching, cross-hatching techniques. They then apply each of the techniques to shading forms with varying light sources. Finally, students create an abstract value composition using blending and line value.

    Profile
    Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a professional artist, children's book illustrator and stage artist- my works have been exhibited around the world. I love working with the next generation of artists, teaching them my trade and nurturing their talent in an encouraging environment. I am a fast teacher that teaches a lot of information in my classes. Students that have studied with me for years are producing exceptional works that make my heart sing! :-)

I love teaching art to creative young minds and have taught in my community for over 15 years! I have taught homeschool art classes from ages 5-18 and I have also had the privilege of teaching art at local preschools AND I have taught art at nursing homes and retirement communities. This has given me to chance to teach from ages 2-92! I love exploring creativity through the lens of "You can do it - and I can teach you how!" No matter a student's current ability, with proven visual aids and assistance, I can help my students reach their personal goals. If they have the passion to learn, they WILL improve their skills!

As a means to help my students, I am continually improving my own skills, I stay current by continually practicing my own art and learning new techniques, while working with my agent in licensing my artwork. I stay current in my field so that I can keep my students current on trends and methodology.

It is my joy to learn and to teach!

    Please note:

*My classes cover a lot of material and are jam-packed full of information that deal with the nuts and bolts of the apps that I teach.
*My classes are fast-paced and full of information and practical applications.
*For most classes, uploads are required before class begins. Please check the classroom beforehand to ensure that all the files are loaded and ready to go in the Procreate gallery. We need every second of class time for instruction.
*I strongly encourage students to take my classes in order. There are many things to be learned in each class and each lesson builds on material presented in the previous classes.
*While I am teaching, I can not answer emails and try to honor my families time by keeping office hours of M-Fr 9-5 for communications.

One last note: It is better for your student to take my classes on two devices ---one to draw on and one to watch the Zoom class! If this is not an option, remember that the recordings will be available after class!! My classes are jam packed with information and tend to move quickly!

Your student CAN do this - I CAN teach them how!
    --See you in the classroom!!

(Because I am currently illustrating within the industry - my schedule on Outschool has become more sparse. Please let me know if there is a class/time that you are interested in!)
