What's included

1 live meeting
50 mins in-class hours per week
Homework
Homework is up to each individual family. I am happy to assign work to be completed between meetings to reinforce concepts that we cover together. This is a great way to know if students are retaining information and are ready to move on, or if more time is needed on any given skill.
Assessment
Students will be informally assessed during class so that I can adjust class time to the learner’s needs. There is no formal assessment. For parents who would like a more formal assessment, please reach out.

Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 12
During this private tutoring session, we will focus on the student’s current writing abilities or project. Time will be directed by student needs and can include any part of the writing process, including brainstorming/topic selection, thesis statements, outlines, rough drafts, writing introductions / conclusions, paragraph writing, transition sentences, in-text citations, works cited pages, or more. Tutoring is available over at least three weeks in 25 or 50 minute classes.

If your learner does not have a current writing project, but needs to improve in this area, I'm happy to direct our time to develop their writing skills. Time can be spent focusing on paragraph writing or essay writing. We will begin where the learner is at and develop skills from there.

For beginning writers, we will work through paragraph writing focusing on the writing process as well as elements of paragraphs. For more advanced writers, we will work on essay writing skills, beginning with brainstorming and outlining and continuing through the process to achieve a polished final draft. The following is a sample schedule for beginning writers, as well as a sample schedule for more advanced writers.

Sample Schedule for Paragraph Writing:
Week 1: Elements of a paragraph, the writing process, types of paragraphs, narrative paragraphs
Week 2: concept review, informative paragraphs
Week 3: concept review, opinion paragraphs

Sample Schedule for Essay Writing
Week 1: types of essays, review of assignment (if applicable), brainstorming, thesis statements, outlines
Week 2: constructing body paragraphs, quality word choice, transition sentences
Week 3: writing introductions
Week 4: writing conclusions and works cited pages
Week 5: revising and editing strategies

Time will be spent with a combination of direct instruction, looking at examples, and practically applying what we’ve discussed to your learner’s work. The speed at which these sessions progress will be dependent on each individual learner. We will spend as much or as little time as each student needs to master a concept. These sessions can be helpful for students who are struggling with paragraphs, working on five paragraph essays, those writing ten page papers, and everyone in between.
