Class Experience

This course is designed for advance learners. In this fast-pace course, your child will be exposed to the world of beginning reading skills, shapes, identifying CVC words, math concepts, and life science.

The weekly structure of this course will include your child working on calendar skills (days of the week, months of the year, and the date), strengthening letter recognition and letter sound skills, continued shape learning reinforcement, and identifying their emotions. In this course, your child will have one day devoted to mathematics and reading/language arts, arts and crafts, and one day of science structure lessons and activities.

Each week your child will be introduced to 5 - 10 sight words. These sight words will be used in various reading and language arts lessons. These assignments will vary between printable materials, powerpoint presentations, and video presentations. Your child will begin learning to blend CVC words, short and long vowel words. Your child will participate in guided reading of passages and encouraged to independently read short passages in class. We will explore the areas of reading comprehension, pulling context clues out of a passage, and learning to draw conclusions based on a provided reading passage. Your child will begin mathematical concepts related to single digit addition, subtraction, greater than, less than, and measurement skills. Your learner will continue to practice counting beyond 20 and number identification. In this session, your young learner will devote one full class per week in the area of life science.

This will be an engaging class for your young learner. Your child will be positively encouraged through verbal praise, certificates of accomplishment, and plenty of high-fives and party dances. Your child will be encouraged to physically participate in physical movement, such as dancing, jumping, and jogging in place. Some lessons and activities will include games, cutting, pasting, and weekly printable materials will be sent out by Sunday of the previous week. The printable materials will be essential, as they will be used in class on the daily basis.

Hello, my name is Dominique Mahon. I live in the wonderful Windy City, also known as Chicago. I am a mother of four beautiful daughters and grandmother of two beautiful children. I became a foster parent about 1 year ago and it has been very rewarding.

I possess my Masters in General Psychology and a Bachelors of Science in Healthcare Administration. I have 12 years of experience homeschooling my four children and five years of academic enrichment support for diverse learners in a homeschooling environment. My experience with academic enrichment support for diverse learners was specifically focused towards children ages 4 - 12 years old with behavioral and learning impairments. I have eight years of experience tutoring college-level adults in the areas of English Composition, Business Marketing and Strategies, and Childhood Development. I currently work with children ages 6 - 10 years old with moderate to severe autism. This involves planning, preparing, and running academic, occupational, and speech coursework. I have two years of experience performing academic testing and developing academic programming for autistic children. I have two years of experience learning how to develop and build upon appropriate goal-oriented occupational therapeutic programs for autistic children.

I enjoy teaching and engaging with young learners. I love watching their little eyes light up as they engage in learning while having fun. As a previous online student, I understand the challenges and diversity of learning through an online platform. I pledge to help build your child’s confidence and encourage their engagement through interactive play; while learning from the comfort of their homes.
