Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 12
Advanced Level
Private writing tutoring and instruction allows students to get the individual attention they need to thrive. This course is designed for talented students who already love reading and writing, but want to experience a 1:1 coaching/mentoring relationship with an English teacher.

I was an English professor for 11 years before transitioning to a full-time writing career, and I have taught creative writing and composition in many different settings, including community arts centers, my university classroom, online classes for adults, and Outschool.

How this works:
In our first meeting, the student and I will discuss their interests, their writing experience, and what they want to get out of the tutoring arrangement. I'll create a writing prompt for the student based on their unique interests and skills, and the student will be expected to complete that writing task by the next week's meeting.

In subsequent meetings, we'll start by catching up briefly and sharing the highs and lows of the previous week. Then, we'll discuss the student's work on the writing prompt from the previous week and practice some more writing activities. Finally, we'll create another writing prompt for the next week. (Sometimes, the prompt will be to revise the previous week's work.)

In this class, students will be able to choose whether to focus on: narrative fiction writing, narrative nonfiction writing, mechanics, grammar, and developing a writing practice.

"JOIN WITH A FRIEND" OPTION: If you would like to take this class with a friend, please contact me to set up a listing with 2 learners. The cost for 2 learners will be $35 each per 45-minute session, instead of $45. This creates a discounted version of this class and a more social experience without needing to take a large group class.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I was a tenured English professor and taught collegiate-level English for more than 11 years. Today I write full-time and teach on Outschool on the side. My creative nonfiction essays have been published in literary journals, in magazines, and by online publishers. I have limited tutoring availability on Outschool but really enjoy working 1:1 with students to help them strengthen their writing.
