1-2 hours per week. Homework: Learners will write each week and receive feedback on the portions of their writing they choose to upload each week. Students should upload at least one paragraph, but are encouraged to upload more. The amount of time this takes will differ for each individual learner. Learners will be writing individually but will be offering structured feedback to other learners each week on the classroom page. Learners will be completing their main project (writing a book) individually. Occasionally we may do a short group writing project as a warmup during the live sessions, as it is a great way to get to know each other and find inspiration for new characters and settings.Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
Intermediate - Advanced Level
This class provides learners with support, encouragement and inspiration for writing their own book. As an instructor I offer structures and suggestions, but my most important role is that of a facilitator and a fellow author. I too will be writing a new book during the eight weeks of our class! I know I couldn't have finished writing my first chapter book without the help of the members of my writers group. We shared tips with each other, commiserated when we had writers block and helped each other to see possibilities when we hit roadblocks. We provided feedback to each other using a specific structure that felt safe and constructive. I am looking forward to facilitating this class and creating a safe, respectful and productive environment for each young author to express their unique vision and style and learn new skills. I use a system of feedback based on "I notice, I wonder." Students respond to each other's work in a way that is specific and encouraging. I will model and teach several variations of this feedback system during our 10 weeks together, and I will monitor and ensure that all students stick to this system when responding to work shared by their peers. Each week students will: -Discuss a specific technique or challenge related to writing a book (see list of topics below). -Brainstorm with peers. -Have an opportunity to practice new tools during a short free write. Sharing a piece of what they have written during the free-write is optional. -Upload at least one paragraph of writing to the classroom page or message a link or file to the instructor before the next live session. -Offer feedback to peers in accordance with our agreed upon feedback structure. -Have the opportunity to share their experience of the process of writing with their peers during our live sessions and in the classroom message board. Weekly themes: 1. What our book is about, why we feel compelled to write this book. 2. Introducing our characters and character voice. 3. Central conflict and overall shape of the narrative. 4. Setting and description. 5. Dialogue and relationships. 6. Building in surprises, respecting the reader. 7. Ideas for illustrations or cover art, quotes to start chapters or dedications. 8. Review and celebration!

Meet the teacher
Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! My name is Meredith. My favorite thing to do is CREATE in community, and that includes collaborating with my community of learners here on Outschool. I love providing students with tools to communicate effectively and tell stories through writing, acting, movement, improvisation, drawing and design. I feel inspired as I watch their skills grow during our work together. I enjoy using my imagination and 30 years of teaching experience to plan each new class and customize the curriculum to match my students' interests and learning goals. Working in partnership with families and students is important to me, because as a parent I know how much it means to have a teacher take the time to really get to know my child and help them get the most out of an educational experience.
I am currently teaching 1:1 sessions on Tuesdays only, and limited group classes.
When I'm not teaching you can find me acting, directing, dancing or writing plays and books.
Some of my favorite acting roles include a monster, a fairy, a movie star and a queen.
I also like to play with my cat, draw, dance and take long walks by the lake near my home in Seattle, Washington, USA.
I grew up in New York City and received my BA at Yale College. I have performed and taught in many towns and cities in the United States. Some of my most inspiring experiences have been my years with Living Stage in Washington, DC and at Seattle Children's Theatre. I have also written a chapter book: "The Ghostlight Kids Get Hooked," an adventure that takes place backstage in a theater.
I would say the skill that most defines me as a teacher is listening carefully to what each student has to offer and weaving that into the direction a class is taking, whether that means centering a story on students' suggestions or recalibrating a lesson plan on the spot. My oldest child (now an adult) is neurodivergent, and I find that my experiences with my child and other ND students has made me a good partner for learners with a wide range of learning styles.
In addition to teaching creative drama, acting and Improv I have taught Math, Language Arts, Health Ed concepts and Science concepts to small groups of learners. I have training in trauma informed practices as well as techniques for teaching Social Emotional Learning through the Arts. I have experience leading friendship groups and community service projects.
I have been teaching for over 30 years and every day is a new, exciting adventure. I learn as much as I teach!
