Description
Class Experience
Students will work through the process of writing a book. Students will learn to give and receive structured, respectful and constructive feedback. Students will consider and practice aspects of writing such as creating compelling stories and characters, describing settings, writing dialogue, and more (please see weekly themes above).
Homework: Learners will write each week and receive feedback on the portions of their writing they choose to upload each week. Students should upload at least one paragraph, but are encouraged to upload more. The amount of time this takes will differ for each individual learner. Learners will be writing individually but will be offering structured feedback to other learners each week on the classroom page. Learners will be completing their main project (writing a book) individually. Occasionally we may do a short group writing project as a warmup during the live sessions, as it is a great way to get to know each other and find inspiration for new characters and settings.
Students will need a notebook or computer for writing assignments, and will need to be able to upload their writing to the class page between sessions. Handouts with tips for writing and resources for further study will be provided. Please note: this class is focused on WRITING a chapter book, and does not cover formatting or publishing a book, so no specific software is necessary.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Learners define their own goals for this process of writing a book, and evaluate their own progress through self-reflection. The instructor's role in this class is to provide structure, feedback and encouragement on the creative journey.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
