Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 9
In this class, students will be gently introduced to some foundational Pre-Algebra concepts. Students will be introduced to the concepts listed below, and will have practice opportunities. This class is a supportive environment where students can become familiar and comfortable with Pre-Algebra topics.

This class is the second in a Pre-Algebra series. I can be taken alone, or taken in order with the other courses. Each Pre-Algebra course covers a unit in Pre-Algebra.

Topics covered in each of the six meetings are provided below.

1st Meeting: Combine like terms

2nd Meeting: Simplify expressions

3rd Meeting: Factoring expressions by dividing the GCF

4th Meeting: Product rule of exponents

5th Meeting: Power rule of exponents

6th Meeting: Quotient rule of exponents

Background Knowledge: Students should be fluent with basic math operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students should have also previously studied operations on positive and negative numbers and the order of operations (PEMDAS).

Guided notes and practice problems will be provided for each session. All you need is access to a printer.

During class, the I will guide students through the provided guided lecture notes following an "I Do, We Do, You Do" format. Students will first take notes while I explain each method. Then, students will have an opportunity to practice applying the method with a lot of teacher support. Finally, students will practice applying the methods on their own by completing a homework assignment. Time is set aside at the beginning of class to ask questions and get help on homework problems.

I have successfully taught students Pre-Algebra through Algebra 2 for thirty years in a variety of school settings. I've worked with students who have learning challenges and high-achieving students, and many students in between. I bring these experiences to the classroom. I know which content can be challenging, and have developed a variety of ways to help learners succeed.
