The first half of the class will explain the two operations of addition and subtraction with both positive and negative integers. The second half of the class will explain the two operations of multiplication and division with both positive and negative integers. I will give a break between the two classes for a few minutes. If time allows, I'll cover positive and negative decimals and fractions. I teach with slide presentations where I model with examples. Worksheets are provided to follow along with the lesson and provide problems written out for the learner to solve. We will also work through examples together before I ask them to try some on their own to demonstrate competency. I encourage discussion and participation from each learner. I always like to bridge an understanding to real world examples, especially with the mathematics vocabulary.
Learning Goals
Students will be instructed how to apply and extend previous understandings of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to positive and negative integers using number line diagrams and other representations to solve real world and mathematical problems.
If time allows, we can extend to fractions and decimals.

Utah Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I'm Mrs. Essmeier, and I love teaching Mathematics. There are so many wonderful patterns to discover with numbers. Understanding why you use certain equations and how these concepts work is an important part of mathematics. My objective is to help my students to understand the connection between the math they learn and the real world in which they live. Mathematics is something you will use every day in one way or another. The more you know and understand, the more you will use.
I provide one on one tutoring for one, two, or three days for one week or ongoing. My tutoring includes the topics found in the curricula for most 6th through 10th grades - number sense, equations, functions, graphing, geometry, fractions, decimals, and more.
I teach Monday - Friday. Please contact me to request times (include time zone) and days available.
I retired from teaching school after 39 years, but I'm not tired of teaching. I've been on Outschool since the fall of 2020. My various degrees include a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education, a Masters degree in Mathematics Education, a Math Specialist enhanced level 2, and an ESL endorsement. My teaching experiences include grades 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th for 30 years. I then moved to the middle school and taught 7th and 8th grade for nine years.
I do hope to help many more learners understand and appreciation the beauty and need for mathematics.
