US Grade 6 - 8
This class will cover the concept of using multi-step ratios and proportional relationships to determine the percent of change, simple interest, taxes, mark-ups, and sale discounts in real world examples. There will also be examples and practice for changing fractions to decimals, fractions to percents, decimals to percents, decimals to fractions, percents to decimals, and percents to fractions. I use slide presentations to teach. I start off with understanding the mathematical vocabulary and terms. I then model the concepts using examples. I have students try several problem examples together with me, and then students are expected to try several problems on their own for practice. I also make connections to the real world by using story problems to set up the operations with the concepts. I strongly encourage discussions and participation from the learners.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to use multi-step ratios to solve real-world examples of simple interest, tax, mark-ups,and percent of change.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Utah Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I'm Mrs. Essmeier, and I love teaching Mathematics. There are so many wonderful patterns to discover with numbers. Understanding why you use certain equations and how these concepts work is an important part of mathematics. My objective is to help my students to understand the connection between the math they learn and the real world in which they live. Mathematics is something you will use every day in one way or another. The more you know and understand, the more you will use.
I provide one on one tutoring for one, two, or three days for one week or ongoing. My tutoring includes the topics found in the curricula for most 6th through 10th grades - number sense, equations, functions, graphing, geometry, fractions, decimals, and more.
I teach Monday - Friday. Please contact me to request times (include time zone) and days available.
I retired from teaching school after 39 years, but I'm not tired of teaching. I've been on Outschool since the fall of 2020. My various degrees include a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education, a Masters degree in Mathematics Education, a Math Specialist enhanced level 2, and an ESL endorsement. My teaching experiences include grades 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th for 30 years. I then moved to the middle school and taught 7th and 8th grade for nine years.
I do hope to help many more learners understand and appreciation the beauty and need for mathematics.
