The goal of this class is to fill in the gaps older learners may have in skills related to phonemic awareness, phonics, and spelling. Each week, we will focus on a different set of phonemes by studying the letter(s) and sound(s), the rules behind it, and words containing the phoneme that might be encountered during middle and high school content area classes such as science, history, geography, and mathematics. We will use slides to show each phoneme and examples of words containing the phoneme. We will also work on reading sentences and short passages containing words with the targeted patterns. Students may choose to join the discussion through either microphone or Zoom chat. I ask learners to turn their cameras on during the greeting segment of class, then they may turn camera off if desired. In addition to the listed topics, students may request assistance with words or patterns encountered in their current reading assignments for other classes or hobbies.
