Class Experience

In my classroom, students participated in power writing weekly as one part of their balanced writing curriculum. I am recreating this structure for your child at home. You can drop in to one class or sign up weekly to make it part of your child's routine and part of a healthy writing curriculum for them. Students will receive a "cookie jar" during their first session. Each session, they will receive a different emoji cookie to put in the jar and record their word count on. This way, they can track improvement each week if they stay with the routine!

Writing fluency is an important component of being a proficient writer. It is getting writing on paper without erasing, worrying overly about spelling and sitting and wondering what to write about. This class will take students through the routine of “power writing” or writing as much as you can in an allotted amount of time. This class will begin with brainstorming ideas, discussing their idea and generating words that the children may need to get their thoughts on the paper quickly. Then we will take time to write, count our words and reread and add to our writing. Once children learn power writing, they can do this easily on their own as a way to continue building their writing fluency. It is motivating for them to count their words each time and then the next time try to beat their word count. They are in competition with no one except themselves. Ready, set...write!

We will head to breakout rooms where students are put in a partnership or small group to discuss their topic. Students will learn how to talk about a topic with a partner, how to be a good listener and how to ask a partner probing questions. This is an important skill in the common core classroom and in life and is one that many children need to be explicitly taught.

Teacher expertise and credentials
California Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
I began my teaching career teaching reading intervention to small groups of students, K-5. I then received a full-time teaching position teaching First Grade (5-7 year olds). During summer breaks, I did private reading tutoring for children K-6. I taught for eight years after which time I decided to temporarily leave teaching to stay home with my children. Since leaving the classroom, I have done reading consulting, private tutoring, participated in many "Mommy and Me"-type classes and now have seen education from the parent perspective. I have the skills needed for teaching, but also the empathy for what it is like to be a parent with a child in school and now the the newly-acquired knowledge of actually teaching my own child at home. These skills together make for a dynamite combination.

My true love is teaching Language Arts (Reading, Writing, Spelling, Phonics). My experience in the classroom, especially tailoring instruction to individual learners and monitoring teaching based on student responses, will help me deliver these topics in a way that will help students in the online setting. I also have the credentials to back up this experience, holding not only a Teaching Credential, but also a Masters in K-12 Curriculum and Instruction as well as my Reading Specialist Credential. In addition, I completed my writing fellowship with the San Diego Area Writing Project and have presented professionally at teacher writing conferences. I am also trained in International Baccalaureate teaching and bring this knowledge into providing culturally relevant lessons.

I believe firmly that every child deserves to have a teacher who provides them with the best instruction each time they enter the classroom-both in physical and online settings. I am bringing my best teaching lessons and strategies from the classroom and transferring them to an online format that works. Your child will get to feel the magic of being in my classroom and experience a high quality lesson no matter where on the globe you are located.

Most importantly, I am eager to work with your child to help them advance in their reading and writing. The beginning stages of a child's reading and writing are such a special time; I am excited to be a part of this journey with your family.
