US Grade 3 - 5
Welcome to our 3rd/4th/5th Grade Writing Workshop, where we'll learn how to make our writing go from ordinary to extraordinary! Here is what one Outschool parent as to say about this class: π¬"This is fast results class. My learner has always struggled with 'writer's block'. Her Year 5 essays never exceeded a half page in length and essays given as homework always end in tears. Within the first month of taking this class her writing has dramatically improved both in quality and quantity. She is confident and more concise in essay planning. Her sentences no longer contain descriptors like good and nice, and her previous 2 sentence paragraphs are now effortlessly written with 4-5 sentences. This is a well paced class. Each style of writing is broken down step by step. The teaching is both effective and encouraging." Two elements of this class that make it successful and produce results with writers: -We look at "mentor texts," or published models, of each type of writing to see how our completed writing should look. -We apply what we learn in the lesson to craft our own piece of writing and receive personalized feedback (during or after class) Your learner will receive individualized feedback and personalized instruction to help meet their needs and grow as a writer. The writing tasks focus on building and strengthening ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions within real-world writing tasks. Each lesson includes: -a mini-lesson/instruction -studying and analyzing a model of that type of writing -crafting our written piece -feedback is given (during or after the class) Lessons: Lesson 2: Search for a Topic Lesson 3: A Writer's Notebook Lesson 5: Find the Focus Lesson 6: Stretching a Moment Lesson 7: Limit the Topic Lesson 8: Topic Web Lesson 9: Let the Title Show Focus Lesson 10: How a Story Is Developed Lesson 11: Focus with a Lead Week of June 3: Lesson 13: Experiment with Leads Week of June 10: Lesson 14: Show, Don't Tell Week of June 17: Lesson 15: Develop With Details Week of June 24: Lesson 16: Sharpen The Picture Week of July 1: Lesson 17: Using Action Verbs Week of July 8: Lesson 18: Vivid Verbs Week of July 15: Lesson 19: Writing That Shows Week of July 22: Lesson 20: Compare To Make It Clear Week of July 29: Lesson 21: Figurative Language Week of August 4: Lesson 22: Replace Overused Words Week of August 11: Lesson 23: Using Dialogue Week of August 18: Lesson 24: Paragraphing Week of August 25: Lesson 25: Point of View Week of September 1: Lesson 26: Satisfying Endings Week of September 8: Lesson 27: Writing a Summary Week of September 15: Lesson 1: Find a Topic That Matters All lessons are independent of each other.
