Introduction to Essay Writing
Learners are introduced to the essay writing format and the Key Word Outline
 Week 2
Lesson 2
Stick and Branch Method
Learners practice writing and retelling notes from verbal sources
 Week 3
Lesson 3
Note Taking
Learners will work on summarizing a primary source, practice note-taking, and write a 2 paragraph summary
 Week 4
Lesson 4
Basic and Expanded Essay Models
Learner will be exposed to TRIAC and use this method to write a 1 paragraph summary
 Week 5
Lesson 5
Tools of Invention
Learners will continue to practice note taking with tools of invention and write a 1 paragraph summary in response to a prompt
 Week 6
Lesson 6
Refining Paragraphs
Learners will refine 2 previous paragraphs with added vocabulary, sentence variety, and literary devices
 Week 7
Lesson 7
Inventive Writing
Learners will practice personal essay writing by writing a 500-700 word personal essay
 Week 8
Lesson 8
Writing From Multiple Sources
In this lesson, learners write a 2-3 page produce life cycle paper using multiple sources with citations in the MLA style

Academic Research
Learners will learn to conduct research and write an annotated bibliography using the APA format
 Week 10
Lesson 10
Thesis
This lesson focuses on writing a 1,000 word position paper with a proper thesis

Lesson 11
Story Types
Write a 1 to 2 page reflection essay
 Week 12
Lesson 12
Analyze Writing Styles
Write in the fable style of Mark Twain and G.K. Chesterton
This class is taught by a certified IEW teacher with years of experience teaching the IEW method.

Details: There are rubrics for each assignment that the instructor will fill out and return as assignments are sent in
While IEW classes are specific and advanced knowledge of IEW structure and style can be helpful, it is not required.  However, if this class feels too advanced, starting with high school Level C IEW classes can help prepare for this class
