This class series is entitled, Nonfiction Matters, because nonfiction is of growing importance as kids get older. During students' 4th grade year, 50% of their reading should be from expository text . By the end of high school, 70% of a student's required reading will be nonfiction. Many students are not equipped with the skills needed to comprehend difficult nonfiction texts. This 4 week course will teach kids how to do close readings of nonfiction texts and answer text-based...
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.1 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
I am an experienced elementary teacher and reading specialist.
Students will be given optional homework for extended practice.
2 files available upon enrollmentI will provide all of the curriculum that we use in class. Students should have prior knowledge about how to use zoom features, such as writing in the chat box or muting and unmuting themselves for discussion.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
I will give a standards-based assessment at the end of the course to check student's understanding.
45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
All content is appropriate for a 9-10 year old student. We will avoid any controversial topics.
