Each week we will explore a new engaging theme, such as occupations (10/5), travel (10/12), artists (10/19), masterpieces (10/26), memories (11/2), landmarks (11/9), leaders (11/16), or collaboration (11/23). 1) We will begin class with an interactive memory game in which we learn something about each other. 2) Next, I will share a quote, short story, or anecdote about our theme. 3) Then, we will play a game focused on expressing ourselves with our voices. 4) We will continue with a game...
1) Each student will feel valued as a part of the community, even if only for that 45 minutes. 2) Each student will learn something new and useful in every meeting, whether it is a historic or scientific fact, new vocabulary, or a concept they haven’t encountered. 3) Each student will practice skills for interaction: speaking clearly, being heard, expressing themselves confidently, taking turns, acknowledging each other, and balancing focus and fun.
In addition to 14+ years of in-person teaching for high school and college students, I have spent the last two years teaching elementary aged learners via the internet. I have worked creatively with elementary students on musicals such as "Schoolhouse Rock, Live," "The King and I," "Shrek," "Oliver," and "Annie." I love customizing creative movement and language games to student abilities. I specialize in creating environments in which students feel safe to express themselves and enjoy each others' unique thoughts and perspectives.
I will modify and accommodate as needed, but students may enjoy having a few feet of space to safely move and dance. Ideally, they will be able to get a little distance from the camera so their body can be seen for movement games as much as they'd like. If a student is at all reluctant verbally and may prefer sometimes writing or drawing responses, that is welcome too. They can do that via a paper and crayons or tablet or other means that you suggest. This class is intended to be interactive enough that students will remain engaged without need of assistance or support from home (though you’re always welcome to watch).
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour 30 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
